When I Found My Cousin’s Family Living in My House Without Asking 😱🏡
Hi, I’m Emily, 33, and I used to think my family was tight-knit—until I came home one night and found my cousin Jamie and his family living in my house. Yes, you read that right—in my house. And no, they hadn’t even asked for permission.
Let me tell you how it all went down.
I’d just come back from a week-long work trip, exhausted and dreaming of my cozy bed, my candles, and a glass of red wine 🍷. But as soon as I opened the front door, something felt off. My hallway smelled like someone had been cooking, there were kids’ toys everywhere, and I could hear a baby crying in the distance. My stomach dropped.
I stepped inside, and there they were—Jamie, his wife Claire, their two toddlers, and their dog. They had literally moved in, set up their stuff, and were making themselves at home.

“Emily! Hey!” Jamie greeted me like I was the guest. “You’re back early!”
“Back early? This is my house!” I replied, trying to stay calm, but my hands were shaking.
Jamie’s explanation? Their lease had ended, they didn’t have a new place yet, and of course, they thought they could stay here for “a while” until they sorted things out. Claire smiled nervously, saying, “We figured you wouldn’t mind… family is family, right?”

I felt my blood boil. I had never given them permission, and they hadn’t even left me a note or text! 📲
I tried to stay cool. I told them, “Look, I get it—you’re in a tough spot. But you can’t just move into my house without asking. It’s not fair, and it’s not okay.”
Jamie shrugged, saying, “We’ll only be here for a few months.” That’s when I lost it. A few months? They were treating my home like a free Airbnb.

I stepped outside to breathe, feeling tears coming on. That’s when I called my best friend, Hannah. “You won’t believe what’s happening,” I told her, voice shaking. She came right over. Together, we came up with a plan:
I’d give them 48 hours to leave. If they didn’t, I’d take legal action.
When I told Jamie and Claire, they were stunned. “You wouldn’t kick out family, would you?” Jamie asked.

“I’m not kicking you out—I’m just taking back what’s mine,” I replied.
Long story short, they packed their stuff and left within the deadline. It was awkward, but necessary.
Hannah and I toasted to my reclaimed peace. 🥂 As I sank into my couch that evening, I realized something important: sometimes, standing up for yourself is the only option.
Family or not, your space is your space. And no one should feel entitled to take it without asking.

So yeah—lesson learned: love your family, but don’t let them take advantage of you. 💪💖
