I convinced my mother-in-law to part with two old chairs, and turned them into something beautiful. With a bit of creativity and effort, they now add charm to my home. Recycled decor at its finest!

Thanks to their simple and charming design, vintage chairs, once found in almost every home, are now highly sought after in restoration projects, seamlessly blending into modern interiors. Just a few years ago, such furniture was often considered obsolete and discarded, but today, many regret making that decision. These pieces bring back the warmth and coziness of home, filled with memories of the past.

Our story today is about a woman who discovered eight of these vintage chairs at her mother-in-law’s house. They had been sitting unused behind a wardrobe, covered in a blanket. Her mother-in-law didn’t want to part with them due to their sentimental value, but the daughter-in-law had always been drawn to such pieces. When the chance came, she took two chairs with the idea of turning them into a bench.

First, she prepared the chairs by sanding them down, then painted them white. She also found some old boards in her shed, which she planned to use. Every visit to the hardware store included picking up wooden blanks, and she had a spindle that had been lying unused for a couple of years. After thinking it through and rotating it in different directions, she decided to place it between the chairs.

Next, she sketched out the first board (on paper) to figure out how it should be cut. The final result was impressive:

  • She added petals to the top of the spindle.
  • With a jigsaw, she cut the first board.
  • The spindle was attached to the board using small wooden cubes for support.
  • The back parts of the spindle and the chair backs were connected with metal pieces made in her workshop.
  • The remaining boards were cut and tested against the chairs.

Now, the decision was whether to leave the wood in its natural state or to paint it dark. After some thought, she chose a dark oak wax for a more refined look.

Once she smoothed the edges with sandpaper, all four boards were screwed onto the chairs, and the result was a unique, completely transformed piece. What do you think of the final result? Do you like it, or do you feel the chairs should have been left as they were?

P.S. A chair like this can always be painted in a bright, stylish color and will blend perfectly with modern interiors. Here’s a vibrant example:

And with a soft, stylish upholstery, it can end up looking even better than anything you’d find in stores.
