Organizing a family dinner for my husband’s relatives was never particularly enjoyable. I did it because Daniel loved having everyone together, and I wanted to make him happy. His parents were decent people, but his sister, Laura… From the start, she was a problem.
Laura always knew how to make me feel small. Sometimes it was sarcastic remarks, sometimes condescending looks. At first, I ignored it, but over time, it became harder. She had a way of making me doubt myself.
But last night, Laura crossed the line. After dinner, I found a note on the fridge: «Check Daniel’s phone.» My heart stopped. At first, I thought it was a joke. But as I held the note, I felt a growing dread. I stormed into the bedroom, where Daniel was half-asleep.
I threw the note at him. «What is this?» My voice trembled.
His face turned pale. «Is this a joke?» he muttered, avoiding my gaze.
I grabbed his phone. The name Sofia caught my eye. I opened the chat, and my worst fears were confirmed: «I miss you.» «I hate sneaking around.» My hands turned cold.
«Who is Sofia, Daniel?» My voice was barely a whisper.
His excuses meant nothing. I had all the proof I needed. But more than Daniel’s betrayal, it was Laura’s method that enraged me. She knew. She let me find out this way, just to humiliate me.
I called her. «You knew.»
«I thought you deserved the truth,» she said smugly.
I clenched my teeth. «One day, you’ll get what you deserve.» Then I hung up.
Turning to Daniel, I threw his phone at him. «It’s over.» And for the first time, I truly felt free.
