On December 26, 2024, a tragic event unfolded for a group of tourists eager to experience the beauty of Lapland.
The news spread quickly, with authorities confirming that many of the passengers were foreign nationals. According to the police in Nordland County, «The news has deeply affected everyone. Several of the passengers on the bus were foreigners.»
Sadly, three individuals lost their lives in the horrific accident. But it could have been much worse, as the bus had been carrying 58 people at the time of the incident. When the vehicle fell into the lake, half of it became completely submerged, leaving the tourists in a terrifying situation. Among the passengers were numerous foreign travelers, including several from France, as local authorities reported.
The tragedy unfolded near Raftsundet Strait, a location known for its stunning landscapes, situated between the Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos. Rescue services arrived around 1:30 p.m., and miraculously, aside from the three fatalities, the remaining passengers were rescued and taken to a nearby school for safety.
The police, led by Bent Are Eilertsen, mentioned the complexities of identifying the passengers due to the diversity of nationalities onboard, which included people from India, South Sudan, Malaysia,.the Netherlands. China, Singapore, and France. The weather conditions at the time were harsh, with strong gusts of wind complicating the rescue efforts.
Authorities have stated that the priority is now to care for the injured passengers. A thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic event. The weather had been particularly difficult in the days leading up to the accident, with fierce winds making operations even more challenging.
