Marie and Benjamin were good friends in elementary school. Years after making a promise, Benjamin decided it was finally time to keep it.

Even if someone faces medical challenges, that shouldn’t prevent them from enjoying high school like anyone else. Sadly, differences can sometimes make people feel like they don’t belong in certain places.

People with Down syndrome are no different from the rest of us—they are amazing, intelligent, and social individuals. In this touching story, a promise made in elementary school is fulfilled seven years later.

When Benjamin was in elementary school, he became close friends with Marie, a classmate with Down syndrome. Despite any differences, they got along incredibly well and cherished their time together.

Benjamin’s mom first learned about his friend with Down syndrome in fourth grade when he asked her if students with Down syndrome could attend the prom. Years later, even though Benjamin and Marie had gone to different middle schools, it was time for him to fulfill that promise.

In a moment that spoke to their lasting friendship, Benjamin proudly invited Marie to the prom, making sure that their promise, made so long ago, became a beautiful reality.
