No one knew what type of mother Trumpet, a Mexlcan gray wolf, would be when she gave birth to her first litter.
Trumpet was born as part of a mission to revive the extinct Mexlcan gray wolf.
But that wasn’t the only thing that made the she-wolf unique. The executive director of the WoIf Conservatlon Center, remarked, ‘She was an only child, which is unusual for a wolf.’
This story was unusual because a litter generally has four to six cubs.
‘The only wolves she knew growing up were her mother and father,’ she continued.
Trumpet did not have the opportunity to see her mother raise succeeding litters and learn how to be a mother from her example.
When Trumpet was two years old, she was brought to Lighthawk, a wild Mexican gray wolf from New Mexico, and the two hit it up right away.
Trumpet became pregnant. She became a loving and compassionate mother after giving birth to three cubs.
A webcam mounted in her den captured footage of the she-wolf caring for her babies, feeding, cleaning, and cuddling them. She hugged her puppies tightly and lulled them to sleep.
