The Lake That Watched Us 🌊🌲
We lived in a quiet house that felt like it had grown naturally from the land itself 🏡🌿. A wide wooden porch faced a calm lake, and behind us stretched endless forests where the trees whispered even when there was no wind 🌬️🌲. Mornings smelled like wet leaves and cold water, and evenings were painted gold by the sun sinking behind the hills 🌅✨. It was the kind of place where time slowed down, and worries seemed too loud to exist.
My sister and I loved that house. We believed it was safe. We were wrong.
One afternoon, after swimming in the lake, I went inside feeling thirsty 🥵💧. My hair was still dripping as I walked into the kitchen. On the table stood a clear glass of water, half full. At first glance, it looked normal. But something about it felt… off 😐🤔.
Inside the glass floated dozens of tiny black dots.

They reminded me of basil seeds or soaked chia seeds 🌱. I leaned closer, squinting. The dots were round, soft, and surrounded by a faint jelly-like halo. A strange chill crawled up my spine ❄️😟.
“Why are you drinking seeds in your water?” I called out casually, trying to ignore the discomfort.
My sister stepped into the kitchen, took one look at the glass—and froze 😨. Her face drained of color. She didn’t scream. She didn’t move. She just stared.
“That’s not seeds,” she whispered.
Before I could respond, she grabbed my arm tightly, her nails digging into my skin 😬. “Don’t touch it.”

We both stared at the glass again. Suddenly, the dots seemed to shift. Not moving exactly… but not still either 👀💭. My stomach turned.
“They’re frog eggs,” she said, her voice shaking 🐸⚫.
The room felt smaller. The air felt heavier. I pushed the glass away as if it might jump at me 🤢🙅♂️.
The question hit us at the same time: how did they get there?
The windows were closed. The door was locked. The glass had been clean. We hadn’t taken water from the lake—only from the tap 🚰. There was no logical explanation.
That night, we couldn’t sleep 🌙😵. Every sound from outside felt louder than usual—the croak of frogs, the splash of something in the water, the branches tapping the roof 🌲🪵. The lake, once peaceful, now felt like it was watching us 👁️🌊.
Over the next few days, strange things kept happening.

Condensation appeared on the kitchen windows even when it wasn’t cold ❄️. Wet footprints showed up near the sink, then vanished 🦶💦. Once, I woke up convinced I heard water pouring, but when I checked, everything was dry.
We stopped using glasses left out overnight 🚫🥛. We covered the sink. We filtered the water twice. Sometimes three times. Still, every time I lifted a glass, I hesitated 😰.
Eventually, we moved away.
The house was sold. The lake still exists. The forest still surrounds it. People say it’s a beautiful place to live 🌳💚.
But sometimes, late at night, I remember that glass. I remember the black dots floating silently, waiting 🖤⚫. And I wonder…
Was it an accident?
Or was the lake reminding us that it had always been closer than we thought? 🌊😶🌫️
