My friend had an old breadbox passed down from her parents. It was kept in the shed and used for storing tools. When she decided to tidy up the shed, she thought about throwing the breadbox away to free up space.
However, as soon as I saw the breadbox, I knew I had to take it. I have a deep love for old things, and I immediately envisioned how I could refurbish it into a beautiful decoration for my kitchen.
The project turned out to be more challenging than expected. First, I used a compressor to blow out the dust and debris, then I washed it with a bucket of water. It quickly became clear that the breadbox needed significant repairs. The bottom was rusty, and the paint was peeling off.
I bought a paint remover and applied it several times to the breadbox. Then, I poured hot water over it to remove the remaining paint and rust. Afterward, I carefully sanded it down using sandpaper, powder, and rust remover.
The final stage of cleaning was using a pressure washer. The powerful stream of water helped clear out tiny particles stuck in the cracks.
While I worked, my neighbor peeked over the fence, curious about the strange sounds coming from my garden.
Once the cleaning was done, I started painting. I chose white spray paint and applied several layers to the breadbox.
After the paint dried, I added a brown stencil design to give it a personal touch.
The last step was creating new handles. My husband and I cut two raised handles from a wooden plank and attached them to the breadbox using screws.
When my friend saw the updated breadbox, she immediately asked if I would give it back to her. I agreed, but in return, I asked her to find me another old breadbox.
I’m so happy I saved this old breadbox from the trash and turned it into a true piece of art. Now it proudly sits in my kitchen, reminding me of happy childhood memories.
